I am taking small blouse and alteration orders from my neighbours in Tiruchirappalli. One blouse recently took me almost 4 hours and the customer still asked why I was charging more than another tailor nearby. I know I cannot keep working for very little, but I don't know how to price confidently.
ONSA's Answer
Four hours of careful work and still being questioned on price is genuinely frustrating, Revathi. But comparing yourself to 'another tailor nearby' is a trap — you have no idea if their price even covers their own time properly. It isn't a fair benchmark to build your pricing around. Instead, add up what the order actually costs you: your hours, your materials, the electricity, even the quiet free corrections you end up doing. Start your price from there. And you're allowed to say no to an order if the price doesn't work for you. The more consistent your work gets, the easier it becomes to say what your price includes, and mean it without feeling guilty.
